May 1, 2012 - Thank You to Coach Pat Sumitt!

I can still remember the day I first met Coach Pat Summitt.

It was my  recruiting trip to play softball for the University of Tennessee.  I was a high school basketball player and got some minor offers to play at some small schools, but I was never interested, I always knew that despite my 6' 3” height and power forward build that I was destined to be in the circle.

coachPatSummit

Coach Summitt immediately asked if I wanted to play basketball instead of softball and Coach Ralph Weekly gave her his stare. Jokingly she smiled and then talked to me about how Lady Vol Basketball was before it was... “Lady VOL” basketball.

When I first arrived on campus at Tennessee I didn't see much of Coach Summitt.  My first year proved to include challenges of building a program and being a difference maker.   So much happened that I couldn't have imagined... like just growing up and making the adjustments to college life.

In my second year, Ralph and Karen told the team that Coach Summitt wanted to come in and speak to us.  We were contending to become the “first ever” Lady Vol Softball team to make a Women's College World Series and to compete on the softball stage.  It was exciting! I can remember the meeting with all the girls and that's when she talked to us about the power of energy.  Transferring energy from each other.  The "Connection". From that day on we were able to build each other up through the power of each other.

After the meeting she asked if there were any questions, so I had to ask her, "If we make the World Series will you come?" She replied without hesitation, "Yes", this is the type person she is. She will forever represent all things orange and white. After the meeting she approached me and said, I would like to talk to you one-on-one.

So of course, I said okay.  And I trekked to her office in between classes and before practice for some individual leadership type meetings.  Most were by myself, but a few were with Candace Parker, a standout basketball player at the time.  She talked to me about leading the team, making changes in programs, walking a path that most are afraid to take.  She believed in hard work and in loyalty.  I will never forget the lessons I learned from her.

That year, we made it for the first time to the Women's College World Series in the history of our program. We were ranked for the first time.  We had a lot of “firsts”.   On the way back to the hotel after we had sealed our golden ticket in two wins over Standford, I made the an important phone call, I called Coach Pat Summitt.  “We have made the World Series and I hope you will still be able to come.

... and like the lessons she taught... She Was There.

Thank you Coach Summitt for your lessons, your time and your true love of SPORT and Orange.

March 1, 2012 - Softball Season Is Upon Us!

Well Ya’ll… softball season is upon us!

Colleges have now played a game or tournament and High School season is starting up too. What about the 12u? They are getting ready for the first tournament of the year.

Myself, I’m getting ready too. I’m getting ready to be ready for my version of Spring Training with Toyota. I’ll be heading over there mid-march to take on the 2012 season.

If you have had the chance to experience a Live 2 Bring It clinic or event this past winter, you know that I talked a lot about creating a pitching load, and driving your knee to create some major Hi-Ya extension! I’ll be working on the same thing as I prepare, trying to make sure that I am getting the most I possibly can out of my legs.

So if you're a pitcher, and you have or haven't made it too an event this winter it doesn't matter, take advantage of the this blog and example and go out there in your next couple of weeks and really work on getting that leg kick!!!

January 09, 2012 - New Years Day in Europe!

Hi Y’all!

Hope everyone is ready for the new year! If you follow me on twitter @monicaabbott you may know that I went on a European Vacation over the new years holiday. What a way to start 2012!  It was my first vacation ever without taking a softball glove, cleats, or running shoes.  It was eye opening!

Everyday, I walked all over the city seeing some of the most amazing historical sites.  I was lucky to have two life long softball friends come with me, Andrea Duran and Natasha Watley.

paris 2012 notre dame cathederal

Paris 2012 - Notre Dame Cathedral

It was really interesting to me to see the different architecture and uniqueness of each city, yet beautiful in its’ own right. It kind of reminds me of us as people and softball players.

We are all very different people, and each position carries characteristics and ideas that another position doesn't have. Each person develops and matures into that position as time goes by.

This is how the cities are, they have developed into their own identity over years and years.  If it took them centuries to become so brilliant and divine I can't wait to see what this next year and the many to come have in store for us, as we  grow and develop as people through circumstances, experiences and how we will relate it to our play and action as a softball player.

December 27, 2011 - Remember the Perfect Game!

Hi Ya’ll!

Last night I was working on my computer when a Chicago Bandits teammate, Danielle Zymkowitz messaged me this:

“So, Drew Brees just broke a huge record and all of his teammates are all wanting pictures with him… lol, like the perfect game you threw”

She was referring to the “Perfect Game” I threw versus the Akron Racers this past summer, but comparable to Drew Brees, I don’t know.

Later, I watched his locker-room speech, and his continual appreciation to the team and support of the people that help prepare the team for success, he mentioned the Defensive Lineman remembering that he blocked for them to have the chance on offense to score.

This reminds me so much of softball, whether it's a Perfect Game, or the NCAA Strikeout Record, there is so many players and people that contribute to your success. The trainers keeping you healthy, your coaches knowing their coaching patterns, the great catches, the momentum created by defense and offense, the morale, the conviction, and most importantly the belief and pride the team has in each other.

Congrats to Drew Brees on his record and here's too many more coming your way, Drew.

Keep on Living 2 Bring It and much Congrats and thank you to the supports, teammates, coaches, owners, friends and fans that helped him… but most importantly those that have helped and prepared me for success.

God Bless,

December 7, 2011 - “Coach Ralphie” makes Hall of Fame!

Hi Ya’ll,

It’s always great to be able to get together with 500 of you best friends away from the softball field. This year I got to see my college coach, Ralph Weekly from the University of Tennessee be inducted into the hall of fame.

Ralph, Karen and the Lady Vol family have been an integral part of my career. Ralph and Karen challenged me in ways that others would not. They never allowed me to be the “Princess Pitcher” and I am ever so grateful for that. Sure, there were some things… I think I’m the only player that ever got to call him “Ralph-ie!”

I’m very glad to be able to say how grateful I am for all the lessons they taught me in how to treat others, be a leader, trust God, and believe in oneself. Congratulations to Ralph, Karen and all the former and present Lady Vols. We made it through and we thank you for helping to mold us.

I’ll leave you with one of Ralph’s favorite quotes and so true: “There’s 3 types of people in this world those who make things happen, those who watch things happen and those who ask What Happened?

... which one are you?

December 1, 2011 - National Fast Pitch Convention!

Hi Ya’ll,

I'm on my way the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Convention this week to hang out with Worth as a Fastpitch Expert.  I'm really lucky to work with Worth and help them develop some of the 5tool Products and my MA 14 Glove!

While I’m there I’ll be meeting with Adidas Fastpitch to talk about the new Abbott Pro cleat coming out in 2012. I’m really excited about the opportunities that have come about and being able to finally grow and develop these relationships into something great! Just got keep growing and reaching higher levels!

Another very cool thing is my college coach Ralph Weekly is being inducted to the Coaches Hall of Fame!  Definitely well deserved, he is a legend in out game and I’m so proud of him. Congratulations RALPH!!

One of my favorite things about the event is the great energy and passion that everyone shows for the sport. Something that is often so hard to find and see. College coaches, HS coaches, travel ball coaches, professional coaches, softball companies, softball staff and professional players from all over. It’s a great atmosphere!

This month show your PASSION!

November 15, 2011 - Toyota Team Wins, Again!

Hi Everyone,

Recently, I was part of possibly, one of the best games of my career. It was truly a blessing to be a part of and I pray that God continues to amaze me in this way!

Toyota, ( my Japan Softball) team participated in the Championship Tournament, as defending champions. You know what they say, “it's always harder the second time around.”
Good thing, I love a challenge.

The games we knew were going to be tough, but controversy followed us before the games even started. On Wednesday before the tournament, during practice I took a shot to the knee during situational scrimmage practice. It ended up making both of my knees; landing and dragging very sore. Then our head coach got really sick on Thursday. The signs didn't look good, we had our obstacles but it didn't matter, our minds, hearts, and determination did.

Toyota came into the tournament playing the two seed Rennesas, (Ueno) in the first round. The team hit well through out the game, but in this extremely intense game, we weren't able to push a run across in regulation. On the defensive side, I carried a no hitter into the 7th inning, until I gave up a single to right field. We went on to win the game in the 8th inning via tie-breaker when Natasha Watley got a hit in “no-mans land” over the second basemans head. Toyota was on the way to the Championship game.

Sunday wouldn’t be any easier, we faced Rennesas again for the Championship, winner take all. This time though Ueno and I both carried no hitters into the fifth inning. In the fifth inning however, Natasha broke Ueno’s up with a double, but again we were unable to score. I carried my no hitter through out eight innings. In the eighth we again went to tie breaker. On a bunt back to me, I threw to first, but the throw curved and took the second baseman into the line and the runner knocked the ball away, one run scored. Then a fabulous defensive play; that was surely an out, on a squeeze got called safe. This was the moment. With slight frustration and disbelief we called time out to calm the senses and keep a clear peaceful mind. 2-0 yes, but impossible is nothing.

We went into the bottom of the eighth inning and immediately scored the runner on second with a base hit by Yamazaki, (the girl who hit me in the knee!). A bunt too second there was now two out, and we were down by one. Up came the number nine batter with two outs, my catcher. There was one ball on the count and I could barely watch. I was sick to my stomach but I had the strong, deep inside of you kind of belief, I knew that we had a chance that if we could just tie it then we could come back and win. I would hold them. We just needed to tie.

With two outs and a one ball for the count, Kazuki Watanabe hit a two run home-run  bomb over the left field fence. We dog-piled at home plate. Toyota took home the Championship. The excitement was amazing, the energy there, but the belief… the never say never attitude and the trust that the team had in each other was incredible. Above all to win games like this you have to take the ball / bat in your hands and say “I’ll wanna be the ONE!” say it and believe it with every ounce of you.

October 25, 2011 - Welcome to Fall!

Hi Everyone,

Preparation, if you have ever read my newsletter or even some of my older blogs, I’m always talking about preparing. (sign up for my newsletter!)

The Japan Softball League regular season is just finished and we now have 10 days before our final tournament opens. It will be a nail-biting battle, but I wouldn't want it any other way.

I’m looking forward to the excitement of the games and the chance for the practice to show in the tournament. The competition is fierce and it is invigorating, but until it gets here, I will just have to prepare for the moment.

September 20, 2011 - Welcome to Fall!

Hi Y’all!

Fall Ball is upon us.

Lately, I have been thinking about some of the other reasons I love this game so much.

Reasons besides, pitching, the heat of the moment, making a ball dance, the perfect pitch, the pursuit of perfection, the camaraderie, the cheers, the fans, the kids that love softball, the bows, headbands, watching, diving, sliding, bunting, hitting,

the COMPETITION, the moment, the excitement, the CHALLENGE, throwing #fire, watching teammates succeed,

the strategy, the stats, the baseball challenges, the extra innings, the championship tournaments, the passion, the love and the just plain old … Live2BringIT attitude.

sept202011n

There are so many things that have my heart in this game but lately I have been thinking that another reason I really love this game is because of the friendships. Normally, I'm not really that outgoing until I get to know someone, but softball has allowed me to make so many great friends. People that I will be able to talk too for years too come. Instant friends.

Friendships and camaraderie are things that show off the field and on the field. I hope that everyone can make at least ONE great new friend this fall season!

Think about some of the things you love too!

August 6th, 2011 - A Perfect Game!

Hey Everyone!  I have got some news for you. I threw a PERFECT GAME on August 4, 2011!

It was definitely surreal. Perfect games are very rare and when they happen you are almost surprised because one ball or play made a difference.  It did when Alexis Jager made a diving catch on a lazy bloop in right field early in the game. It fired me up!

08062011a

So you may be wondering - Did you know?

Well, to be honest. Yes, I figured it out in about the 6th inning when I realized everyone on my team was staying clear of me like I had the plague. I had to talk myself out of it! “Monica, it’s no big deal, just throw strikes.”  Or, “Monica, seriously… you gotta calm down,” this last one was in between pitches when I realized my hand was shaking. Or “Monica, relax take it one pitch at a time, just focus for the moment”. It’s fun to have extra little moment’s like this because it reminds you how MUCH you love this game!

One of my favorite reactions was my catcher, Shannon Doepking who by the way called a superb game, said after it was all over… “I called a change last pitch of the game, I knew we would get her, but all I could think about was… Don’t LET it go through my legs, don’t let it go through my legs, don’t let it go through my legs!” It was priceless, and she blocked it with perfection.

Although, Shannon Doepking and I have teamed up at the University of Tennessee for other perfect games in college, we both agreed that this one was extra special being on the professional side of the game, for the Chicago Bandits, because the pro league hitters are the best in the world and they face these pitchers, a lot. There are no secrets in this league.

08062011b

The next day, after the game, I was honored to throw out the 1st pitch at Wrigley field for the Chicago Cubs. The Bandits have made friends with Chicago Cubs, Carlos Zambrano, and the Big Z Foundation. Caitlin Leaver, has really helped forge this relationship but convinced Shannon and I to throw to him, to see if he could hit the rise! We, of course, went to the park ready to strike him out! We threw some pitches for him and wagered dinner on it.

08062011c

Don’t worry we won dinner! Shannon Doepking even called a change up, mean—all in good fun! We ended with a first pitch that Zambrano caught from me.

I’m looking forward to doing it again, to some other baseball players!

July 4th, 2011 Happy Birthday America!

Happy Birthday America! Itʼs the 4th of July and I am pumped, because I love the USA and Iʼm so proud to be an American!

I recently got back for the Colorado Fireworks / Sparkler tournament.

I had an amazing time coaching in the Pro-Player Clinics with Shannon Doepking, Natasha Watley, Jessica Mendoza and Megan Gibson.

ColoradoIdols2011

Abbott with "Softball Idol" performers in Colorado

After the clinics, we got to judge a Softball Idol competition were the players showed their other talents, singing!  What courage these girls have to stand up and sing in front of all their peers, every girl was talented. They chose songs from Adele, Cee-Lo, and Rascal Flats.  Last but not least, I took my hand at a little bit of side line reporting in the Power Pool Championship that featured the Worth Firecrackers beating the Gold Coast Hurricanes.

I continued my sideline reporting with the All-American game. As a communications major I really enjoyed being able to get out there and talk with the girls and hear some of the stories they told. It was incredible to see such good talent out there from 15-18 year olds. They are going to be college and professional players of the future, and if thereʼs any indication, our future is bright!

This year the 4th lands on a Monday which is a rare occasion that allows me to celebrate! Usually, Iʼm at a softball field, pitching my heart out but this year Iʼm looking forward to the celebrating with a BBQ, lots of sun, fireworks, and my Chicago Bandits

June 10, 2011  - Summer Is In Full Swing.  Time for Softball!

Summer is in full swing. It’s time for summer softball! I’m on my way now to meet the Chicago Bandits.

I just got back from Japan and finishing the first half of the season with Toyota, we ended the first half 10-1. It was a good start to the year and the girls are so inspiring to me, everyday they find new ways to get better and to “Level Up” as they call it. I left them during the summer break to join the Bandits and the NPF (National Pro Fastpitch) for the
summer, we will meet up again for the fall season after the NPF.

As glad as I am to be back in America where people understand me better, I really do miss the girls! They are my family and we have an unexplainable bond through not being able to communicate fluently. It's incredible, and I still don't understand how it works!

I’m excited to meet the Bandits, but anytime I meet up with a new team, I always have that uneasy feeling of starting out with new people and gaining that level of comfort with them.  A new team always provides a lot of new challenges on getting used to new and different personalities of players, coaches and staff.

The Bandits have a brand new stadium also, which is very exciting to me because I never was got to play in the Tennessee stadium, it opened the year I left! So, I am looking forward to having such a beautiful field to call home with the Bandits.

I Hope to see you all out at a game this summer and best of luck in all your summer games, play hard and “Live2BringIT!”

May 01, 2011  - Playing In The Rain!

Lately, it seems that I have been playing, watching and hearing about more games than normal in the rain, mud and muck! Sometimes there are even puddles on the field!!

So, I thought it would be appropriate to dedicate this blog to playing in the rain! So far “April” has brought “showers” but Iʼm definitely dreaming of “May Flowers.”

  1. Visor! - Even if you donʼt usually wear one it will keep the rain out of your eyes and from dripping all over and down your face + you will be able to see better!
  2. A Popsicle Stick! - For your cleats of course, itʼs hard to move when you have pounds of mud stuck to your shoes.
  3. Rosin!- Put it in your pocket to keep it dry! You can just reach in your pocket to use it whenever you start to lose your grip. Also dust your glove, bat, or the area you touch a lot with it to have at least one dry spot on your uniform! Even if you donʼt normally use rosin, in the rain it is a must!
  4. Hairspray- use it too spray your arms to prevent water droplets from trickling down your arms! I keep a travel size one in my bat bag for both rain and hair emergencies!
  5. Layers Layers Layers- Always try to keep a sweat going. Staying WARM is half the battle!! So LAYER all your jackets and sweatshirts and get too jogging and moving your feet while on defense and especially while on offense. Stay Warm girls!

These are some helpful hints for playing in the rain. Do you have any that arenʼt mentioned here?

Email me them at monica@monicaabbott.net and you could receive a prize!

April 5, 2011

What a week! In the past week Toyota has played about 11 games in 5 days. All in preparation for league games that start this week.

We open with Hitachi Software, the same team that I threw a perfect game against in the final tournament for the Championship last year. It will definitely be an exciting opening series & rematch in the Nagoya Dome, home of the professional baseball team the Nagoya Dragons.

At the opening game, each team in the league plays at the dome. The weekend will be a fund-raiser to for the earthquake victims. As athletes, and fans we have a responsibility to raise communities up, bonding each other for a common goal and to be the face of strength among adversity, just as the NY Yankeeʼs did after 9/11. Through, sport their is an amazing platform to bring people together, reunite, raise people up and create a strength in people that they never knew they had. Thatʼs amazing.

In our preseason warm up, Wakatsuki, one of our players, had the scariest play at home plate that I have ever seen. Before I go into detail, to answer your questions- yes she was safe. Wakatsuki, is the best pinch runner I have ever seen. Itʼs her main job, base running specialist. She makes everybody on our team better base-runners because of her insight, and in a game like softball where the speed of the game is just getting faster every step and trick counts. She goes to the base like a fighter stepping into the ring.

Jumping side to side before a quick sprint to change places with the hitter. It FIRES me up every time! In Saturdays game she relieved at first, was bunted to second, and stole third. On the next play taking a chance to push it she went into home as the catcher slid their knee down early, Wakatsuki took home plate but not before a collision, and a scramble on her knees that split open her leg, muscle (fatty tissue and all) and left her lying on the ground. It was scary. Like a true fighter the first words out of her mouth were “I need to be ready for the opening game” but the first words out of the doctors mouth were “It will take at least 5 months to heal.” If you can please send some prayers her way, it would be greatly appreciated.

Please, remember to be safe out there on the softball field use your proper protection and always love & cherish every moment we get to play this great game.

By now you have probably heard of the most damaging earthquake in years to hit Northern Japan, on March 11, 2011. The devastation, is like watching a movie, it just doesn't seem real.

2011 will mark my third year of professional softball with Toyota Motor Corporation in the Japan Softball League.  I have been able to play in so many beautiful areas of Japan, including the earthquake stricken land. The Japanese people have made it so wonderful here for me that it breaks my heart to see the devastation, shock, disbelief and wonder of mother natures strength.

I was flying to Japan the day of the earthquake, we went into the descent to land in Tokyo, but pulled out of the decline about halfway through. After circling, for a while, the captain came on too tell us that an earthquake had hit Northern Japan, and all Tokyo airports had been closed, we were too be rerouted to Nagoya-my base airport. After some travel confusion we finally made it to Toyota City, where for the rest of the night, and next day we could feel smaller aftershocks. Almost like a swaying. It wasn't till the next week that a major aftershock hit again, quite scary but all was okay.

There are several teams in the North, and thank God, that they are all okay. Maybe a little disheveled, not able to practice outside as much (limited to 2 hours) but overall okay. Most people are sending water, boxed food and rice too family in the North and Toyota is collecting clothes, shoes, money etc for the victims.

With all the pain and suffering and shock in this country our Toyota Softball team hopes to be the light of joy, like only sports have the power of doing. Bringing people together, binding them through faith, and lifting their spirits that is the power of sports.

Gumbatte Kudasai Nippon!

Please Pray for Japan.

Have you heard the good news yet? Iʼm playing for the Chicago Bandits this summer in the Pro Fastpitch league. http://chicagobandits.com

Iʼm looking forward to stepping in to the history of this organization and having a home, in a great city that loves athletes and celebrates sport!

MonicaAbbott_BillSokolis

Iʼm on my way back to Japan this week to meet up with Toyota. I canʼt wait, I miss those girls a lot, even though my Japanese is not that good, and their English... is well... better than my Japanese! We somehow communicate.

I think itʼs the love of softball that bonds us and allows us to speak with out saying a word to each other. Itʼs one of the most amazing things that I think about. I mean, seriously... how is it possible that I can communicate with people that I canʼt talk too? Nonverbals are huge, but itʼs sport. Itʼs competition, itʼs trust. That feeling is assuring. Itʼs powerful.

It makes me think about the players on the Bandits and past USA teams and how we have communicated with voices, eyes, smiles, faces etc. So much passes from person to person in the heat of competition, however big or small they make a big difference!

So keep on cheering, directing, information, talking it all out with each other to become better athletes, teams, parents, coaches and fans!

Communication is powerful & it matters!

Hey Everyone,

Okay well itʼs February... you know what that means.
The college kids are getting out there and starting their pre season tournaments and games. Softball is in the air!

I love it. Itʼs a great time of the year, because, all the practice is over and you get to finally play some games. Itʼs a chance to see the changes and hard work that the teams have put in over the off season.

Itʼs been a busy January! Going out to several conferences and speaking on all aspects of the game. I love being able to share my knowledge, listen, and speak to others about the game we love! Especially when they ask questions... then I know they really got it! :)

japan2011
Then to top it all off. Natasha Watley and I made a quick trip to Japan for our traditional Sake Party for our 2010 Championship. What a great thing. The VIPʼs of the company hammer the top of a Sake Barrel, it was quite amazing to see. (pictured above)

Now Iʼm back, and reinvigorated to get ready for my trip over there. I donʼt go till March, but Iʼm ready to be back with my Toyota girls and work towards our 2011 goals! Itʼs a great time of the year and excitement is in the air for the upcoming season.

Good luck to all you coaches and players fighting it out in pre-season. For all my high school girls getting ready for tryouts--you gotta Bring it!

Dear Softball Fans, Friends & Followers

When I was a young girl all I ever dreamed of was playing in the Olympics. It was my entire life's goal, to wear USA across my chest, stand on a podium and hear the National Anthem playing. Now, at the age of 25, 3 years after the final Olympics for softball in Beijing, China; I have to wonder what the 10u, 12u, 14u, 16u, & 18u softball players I see, teach, and speak to on a daily basis are striving for. Everyone knows, there is no more Olympics for softball. Not next year in 2012, and not in 2016. Our only slim hope is 2020, and that's 8 years away. (which, I hope I'm still around for!).

As, one of the last Olympians to compete in our sport,  it is my duty and obligation to protect and build this sport that i love and to provide new dreams for softball players everywhere. That is why, I made the hardest decision of my career this past week. I had to ask for a leave of absence from the USA National team for the 2011 season. I didn't want too- but I knew I had too. I had to chose between USA and the NPF (National Pro Fastpitch League) because for the first time since I finished at the University of Tennessee in 2007, we have to play on one team for the summer.

This was the hardest decision, for me. I spent many restless nights trying to decide.  The NPF has struggled to survive at times, and to build the league without the Olympians. For the 2011 season, I will try everything I can to help build this league so the youth of fastpitch will dream to play professionally, and they will have a place to play after their college dreams are fulfilled.

I ask you, the fans, my fans, to join me in this cause for the NPF. Please support us by coming to games, watching on tv, watching online, following players, following teams, and as viewers demand the best of us.

God willing, I hope to return to play for the red, white & blue, because I am forever indebted to serve my country. I have asked for a leave of absence and I do hope to return to USA in 2012, if they will have me.

Forever Yours,

God Bless,

November 29, 2010

Hi, Everyone!

It’s Cyber Monday so in true technology fashion I figured, I should get on my Blog!  A lot is happening in my life & career but at the same time, itʼs slowing down as the Holidays approach.

Iʼm back home, and was able to enjoy the Holiday Parade, it was the first time Iʼve ever been. It truly reminded me of where I am from. My town is Agriculture, History, & a lot of Car clubs. We had a flock of John Deereʼs followed by an ice cream truck, following a parade of hot rods! Whatʼs your town?

On the softball side, Natasha Watley and I finished the Japan League #1 and the FINAL tournament as #1. It was the first time in 26 years that Toyota Motor Corporation has won the biggest event in the league, the final tournament. I threw a perfect game in the Championship. A lot of people kept asking did you know? How did it feel? Pitching felt easy, like I threw a perfect game every time I pitched. (Not once in a Blue Moon, like it really is). In high school I can remember occasionally throwing a perfect game and losing! How is that possible, you ask? My team would lose in extra innings, usually
around the 11th when there would be an overthrow and the runner would score. It felt easy, like Sunday morning, and no, I didnʼt know. All I knew & focused on was keeping the best hitters in the league off the bases any way I could! This got me too thinking about pitching, perfect games, preparation and confidence.

Everyone prepares, everyone wants to win, everyone has some sort of confidence right? So how do you know if your preparing better, the same, or heaven forbid worse than your opponents? This is what I will tell you in my next blog... stay tuned!

Make it different

Hi ALL,

I wanted to start this blog a little bit different this time. Since, we are now in spring and softball season is upon us; I thought I would take a moment to talk about 2 things that may easily help improve your game. Maybe you do them already, maybe you don't; all I know is that they have been a significant help for myself! So here you go:

1. Goals - Most of us have heard this in many different aspects and associations. How big are your goals? Did you write them down? Where is that piece of paper now? Growing up, I always had goals. They were big, little, and everywhere in between. Often times though, if we write down these goals, we often lose that piece of paper or maybe the dog ate it? So here's my challenge for you, are you ready? POST your goals somewhere you will see them daily to remind and motivate you: your locker, next to your bed, on the closet wall, the bathroom mirror wherever! Just make them visible to you daily!

2. Routine - It's the "superstitions", the things that make you, you on the field! Whatever, your routine is- be consistent with it. If you have ever seen me pitch either on t.v, or in real life you would notice that I do almost the exact same thing in between every pitch. It's true, I'm a creature of habit. Having a routine allows you to be comfortable, calm, and most importantly focused on what you are trying to do - whether it's striking someone our, or getting a base hit to start the inning. Once you have your routine, stick with it. But, don't worry, you can always tweak and change your routine too. It's no set in stone. It is what works for you, not anybody else. It is your softball style.

Okay, that's my spill for this time. Other than that, here's a quick update: We have new items in the shop- so check them out! I'm also back this season with Toyota and I'll be playing in the NPF this summer with the USSSA Pride, so if you haven't checked us out yet, make sure you do when you get the chance, and make sure you come say hello to me, I'll give a little wave if I can!

Bring It,
Monica

Back to Business

Okay, so I was on the phone with my younger sister Bina, who just started college this semester at Towson University, in Maryland. As she was babbling a long to me about her first practice games of the year (she plays 3rd/1st base), she called me out and said , “You know Mon, the whole point of a blog is to do it on a regular basis, you need to update more often!” Ouch. I guess the truth hurts, but she is right I have been neglecting my blog, I don’t have a good reason. I think oh I need to blog, but then I get preoccupied doing something else. So, here, I am taking Bina’s advice and I’m gonna try and be more consistent.

Let’s see, I’m back in Japan now. The second half of the season has been good so far. We have lost one game (ugh), we had plenty of opportunities to score but didn’t get it done, and then they scored on their one opportunity. It was a tough loss, but a good lesson learning game.

Since, I’ve been back, I made it to a professional baseball game. Natasha and I saw the Yokohoma Bay Bears play the Nagoya Dragons. It was a lot of fun, there was a band for each team that played non-stop during the game. The field was a dome, and enclosed built 3 levels high. Almost every fan had little bats that they banged together to the sound of the bands call. It was so interesting, compared to the Major League.

We have a tournament this weekend in Chiba, Japan. Were playing with a white ball, haven’t done that since I was in High School! (maybe middle school). Wish me luck!!!

World Cup Is Over

Hey Ya'll

Okay, the World Cup is over and what an event we had. Great support at all the games even when it was sticky hot! We played Australia in the final. I got my first big game start, 5inn and then Cat came in to close it out. Jennie Finch, Natasha Watley, LaurenLappin, Alissa Haber, and Ashley Hansen were all on FIRE at the plate. It was exciting to watch the speed of all the players, stealing bases beating bunts out, hit and runs everything. One thing that's evident is that this team is only going to become more and more fun to play with!!!

I was pumped to for the start in the final, maybe a little too pumped... but I guess it gives me even more motivation and learn from something to get better. That is one thing I would say is good advice to anyone, always try to take something that you have done, and get better. Find a way to get better. Even if it's one small thing, it can make a difference down the road.

I'm out with the USSSA Pride in Florida now for the time being. We have a series this week vs Philly. Our game on Sunday is at Disney Wide World of Sports so if your in the area come check it out!!! Take Care!

The Canada Cup

Hi Everybody!!!

We are now going through the second round of pool play at the Canada Cup. It has been as exciting as ever to watch USA. The one thing this team is, IS FAST. It makes me want to act out my secret dreams of being a SLAPPER. (I have a feeling though that the pitching coach wouldn't like that...but I can dream can't I?!)

We've played Canada, Australia, and Venezuela. There are still familiar faces on all teams, but there's a lot of new people too. I love it, because I get observe and analyze them whether there on my team or not. :)

So far the teams been getting along great we've been enjoying the best canadian donuts in the world at the field, and my personal favorite the Kettle Korn. We have started to come up with new nicknames for the newbies and I'm sure time will only enhance the embarassment and inside jokes of those names! I'll keep you updated as we go with the nicknames as we head into the World Cup on our home soil--Oklaholma City, Ok. Looking forward to that!

Take Care, and I hope to see you on a field soon!

Spring = Softball Season

HI!

How is everyone? Spring is in the air...and we all know what that means- SOFTBALL SEASON! If you’ve been keeping up you know that I’m in Japan, playing in their professional league for team Toyota. We have started playing games and league starts soon. I can tell that all the games will be super competitive.

Since, I’ve been here, I have been trying to understand Japanese, but I must say it’s hard! I have figured out how to say nice pitch (eballu), nice spot (ecosis), and bad (dame). I don’t even know if I spelled the words right. Mostly, it’s a constant battle of trying to figure out what my teammates are asking or saying and they trying to do the same. A lot of the time we look at each other and just start laughing! Which is fun, you definitely can’t be afraid to laugh or make fun of yourself while your here because it is so different!

Softball, has been great. My team works really hard, and takes their time in making sure that everything is done the right way. I like being able to work with them and learn new ways to make me a better softball player. Some of the things they do are a challenge for me (like holding a hand stand for 30 seconds!), I couldn’t do that! I’m working on it though, hopefully by the end of the season I’ll have it down!

Right now, the Sakura- or Cherry Blossoms are in full swing! They are beautiful flowers that Japan is known for. When they bloom their pink and when they fall off the tree their white. Gorgeous!!

Hope to see you on a field soon!! Good luck in your season!!

God Bless,
Monica Abbott

ps -we have new items in the shop so check it out!
pss - 615-823-5013 will have weekly updates on games

Going to play in Japan

HI Everyone!!!

I have some surprising but great news-- I'm going over to Japan in March to play softball for 6 months! I'll be playing with a team called TMC-- or Toyota Motor Corporation. It's in Toyota City, or Aichi, Japan. The season is broken up into 3 month increments. So, I'll play during the spring, and during the fall. That means, hopefully, I'll be able to compete for team USA if they pick me again!

I'm excited to be going, but I'm also nervous. I don't know Japanese, and I'm not so sure about the food, and who knows if I'll end up liking it. But I do know that it will be a great experience and opportunity for me to continue my softball dreams. I'll definitely be keeping everyone updated on the games over there through my website so make sure you stay tuned! I'll let you know how my japanese lessons are going!

Oh, one last thing-- DON'T FORGET-- the store is now up and running. Just hit shop on the top bar and scroll down. Were adding new items and if your looking for something that you'd like that's not up there send me an email and I'll see what I can do. Pictures, posters, balls, etc etc!! Check it out!

Tennis, Break and Clincis

Hey ya'll how's it going?

I'm doing pretty good. Enjoying my time off For Sure. I've started playing tennis some, and have after a month and a half off started throwing and working out again. It was hard for me not to workout so much, and even not throw. It was the FIRST time in my life that I've taken more than 2 1/2 weeks off of throwing. That's crazy! I didn't know what to do with myself! I have always been a person since I was little that loved to throw. I would spend hours upon hours at the field playing catch. I had always pitched a lot. But honestly, it was probably the best thing for my body, physically and mentally to get that rest. But I am so Glad to be throwing little by little again.

I've been doing a lot of clinics. We have already had major success with the Monica Abbott All-Star Clinic's in New York City, Atlanta, and Knoxville. We have really enjoyed your comments! The next stops for the clinics are Gulfport, MS -Nov 1, Salinas, CA -Nov. 15, and Virginia Beach- Nov. 22. It's been awesome to get out there and see how excited the youth of softball is. The excitement is contagious, and when the eyes light up your heart and soul is warmed. It's a great feeling.

Mixed Emotions

Hello Everyone,

I must admit that I have been, well, putting off writing this blog. This is because I wasn't sure what I was gonna say. I couldn't write it, I had to many mixed emotions after the tournament. I was at a loss a disbelief. I couldn't believe we had lost, or even more so that it was over. I had been visualizing these moments in my head since I was 12 years old, I'm 23 now. It's over, 8 months on the road with the best players in the world, traveling throughout the country seeing hundreds of little girls, no more late night talks with teammates, or playing silly jokes on each other. No more extra ground balls after practice no more getting pumped during practice because someone just made an awesome play. No more of the dirt/grass/sweat smell of the ball park with the distant smell of hamburgers and hot dogs on the burner. It was over. (At least for now)

Then I realized it was over over. Not only the Olympics and playing with 16 of my closest friends but softball in the Olympics was over. That was a realization in itself. A depression. I know I always knew it wasn't in for 2012, and I do honestly believe that the IOC will "smell the hot dogs" and vote softball back in. I know we are doing everything we can. Plus, after a showing in Beijing of amazing softball talent in all games there isn't any way I would vote no, but it's not in my hands. So, I'll leave it to the powers that be.

After many tears, unanswered questions and talking to teammates, friends and family I have come away with something that I would not trade for all the world. I'm an olympian, I experienced something many people do not get too. I walked away from the Olympics with a silver medal, and a personal best. When I think about how I played I can not say that I left anything on the field, that I have any regrets, that I could have done more or less. To me the game is the game you have to go out there everyday and let it all "hang out," you have to find a way to be SO in the Moment that nothing can disturb you; and when you find a way to do that, you have achieved success. You have a found a way to play with every piece of preparation possible, mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. I'm proud of my Silver Medal.

The other night I was watching tv, and A League of Their Own happened to come on. A quote from the movie struck me, "It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard everyone would do it. The HARD..... is what makes it GREAT." In an essence this is why we play, because it's a challenge at any moment you can break through and have an amazing day or just an average day. It's the endless pursuit of Amazing Perfection that drives us. It's what makes it Great.

I love this game.

Thankyou for your continued support. I hope to see you at a Monica Abbott softball clinic someday soon!
My next blog will be coming soon.

God Bless

Beijing Experiences

Hi All!

Where do I begin? So much has happened in the last 2 days. Let me start at opening ceremonies. I must say I will never forget the feeling of walking into that stadium, united as one country, one delegation. Right before we walked in, as I stood in the tunnel, the chant started...U-S-A, U-S-A, U-S-A. The entire team bellowed through the hall and as we stepped onto the track we were amazed, overwhelmed and so incredibly happy. I HAVE never smiled that much! Every time we saw "old glory" we went crazy. It was the most incredible feeling. We were so happy! Every person, from your everyday celebrity athletes to the person no has ever heard of, we all turned into a the little "KID" inside of us all! ...The flag was raised and then the torch was lit, by a man running side ways in the sky! It was crazy! But as the torch was lit, everyone knew what that meant- GAME ON!

Before opening ceremonies, we had such a great time. We got ready took lots of pictures, met bunches of people. The president spoke to the US delegation and then took pictures with each team. I took pictures with as many Tennessee Alumni as possible (Go Vols!). It was an amazing evening. So amazing that I don't even want to mention how incredibly HOT it was! We were sweating through our parade outfits! The other cool thing was seeing all the other countries parade outfits. I'm sure glad we had Ralph Lauren do the design, it was awesome! A very preppy, summer wedding type of feel, but came across great. Good Job!

Today we had practice. Just when I thought it couldn't get any better, President Bush showed up and talked to us, watched us warm up and take BP. ...and just when I thought that was great our team "prankster" Laura Berg got the president with her classic, "Chalk Handprint" on the back, full five fingers and everything! It was awesome. We were all cracking up, he didn't have a clue. But we eventually told him he "Got Berg-ied", but I think we could have let him walk around all day like that. It was perfectly executed! No bigger prank than on the president, I vote her to the Hall of Fame!

After practice, we had the official softball press conference. I'm enjoying every minute, and trying to reach my quota of meeting 2 new people each day. So far, so good...

My Birthday!!! (+ TV Schedule released)

Hi All!

It's July 28th! Today's my birthday, and as my excitement level raises and I try to get everything done (so I won't stress!) I wanted to write to ya'll real quick before we leave for China. This weekend we go to San Jose, CA to go thru processing. Where were going to get all the clothing that you'll see on tv! Like the opening ceremony outfit (You should be seeing a cleaned up preppy version of Team USA) !! I'm stoked for that! I just got my 5 hour video camera battery so I can make sure to get plenty of footage.

After two days in processing we fly 15 hours to China. It's been really awesome to see everyone getting excited about the Olympics. It truly might be one of the best Athletic Endeavors in the world. The Softball team even has a double page picture spread in Sports Illustrated right now, so make sure you get it while it's hot!!

Okay, I'll be getting back to ya'll at the end of the week to let you know how processing went. Until then, I'll have to try to make SURE I don't forget anything, because there is no getting extra's once your in China!!!

Olympics, Adidas & Yardbarker

HI Everyone!!

Well, were less than a month away from the Olympics now. We're on the last leg of the tour that started in FEB!!! The team has really come together. In this last section of the tour we are going to be able to come together even more, as we have a planned trip through Yellowstone, where we'll be staying in cabins! It's going to be like summer camp! We also are going to be visiting Mount Rushmore.

I recently got to visit the Adidas Campus in Portland, Oregon. Where I got to meet and visit with the people that are developing the softball cleetes. We talked about the future of the cleetes. It was a really good visit and I enjoyed being able to visit with them.

Some, personal news to look forward to and SIGN UP for is we have finalized the schedule for a clinic tour. And I hope that you will look for them in your area.

I also now have a yardbarker account that you can look me up on too: http://www.yardbarker.com/monicaabbott

Well, I got to get going, we have a game tonight! Less than 30 days left now. Lots of preparation left to go!!

Talk to you Soon!

Glove Series is here!

HEY ALL!!

I have great news!! The wait is Finally OVER! The anticipation has built up long enough and the Akadema Monica Abbott glove series is finally available for purchase!!!

I am so excited that it will be out to anyone who wants it now. It is a black glove with baby blue as an accent color. These are 2 of my favorite colors together. They also represent the colors from my past both Lady Vol Blue from college, and North Salinas High School blue from back in the day. The color combination is perfect. Not too much and not too little it still gives that instant x factor to the glove.

I hope that you all like it as much as I do!!!
Talk to you soon.

God Bless,

Monica Abbott

It's May already

Hey Everyone!

As I am traveling around the USA preparaing for the Beijing Games the anticapation and excitement it immensely growing. I can hardly believe it’s May already, and we have less than 90 DAYS till the OLYMPICS!

As the Olympics are getting closer I have finally come to realize the actual cost and travel to Beijing. Because, this is the last Olympics for softball, untill 2016 hopefully, I have brought it upon myself to help get my parents to the games to see me represent the USA. I wouldn’t want it any other way. It is very important for me to have them at the games. This is why I have taken this burden to think of some CREATIVE ways to help fund the travel expenses of the entire Beijing trip. To do this I was lucky enough to have a friend of mine, Jean Ashen, get in contact with an artist that has made a Limited Edition pictorial of me from a High School picture. Im really excited for how this has come out and the opportunity that it will entail. I’m hoping that this will evolve and really be able to support the financial necessities for this trip.

If you can help, please take the Initiative and sign up for one today, if your not able to get one please pass the word. Thank you for you everlasting support and generosity.

God Bless,

Monica Abbott

Back in Knoxville

Hey Everyone!

I'm fresh out of my Alma Mata tour stop at the University of Tennessee Lady Vols. It was an amazing experience. I got to play in the brand new stadium there, which is absolutely gorgeous!

As proud and happy as I was to be back in Knoxville, and play in front of the Lady Vol fans, part of my heart was breaking inside. I have felt so connected and honestly feel that I have invested myself so much into that program to get it where it is today, that standing across from the people that I know so well, was actually a little weird, I almost wanted to cry, BUT I would never ever trade playing for TEAM USA. I'm going to be able to use this experience in my preparations for Beijing, which is what this tour is all about.

So far the tour has been great. Some of the coolest things are: seeing long lines outside the stadiums when we drive up, kids after they get an autograph being really excited, people enjoying batting practice and of course the game itself.

Each day, we try and go out there trying to get better, and work on the tiniest of things (like which way your toes are pointing) that will make a big difference. We are also trying to continue to come together and bond for the upcoming battle.

Everyday is a new experience.

BOUND 4 BEIJING

Hey Everyone!!

What a crazy last couple of weeks. Since you have last heard from me, we have started the Bound 4 Beijing Tour. With 64 cities on the stop, it is going to be very hectic at times, but definitely worth every minute of it! We get to play in cities all over the country, what more can we ask for?? It is pretty awesome. The fans are great. The tour, is so important, because it helps us prepare for the Olympics. Being able to get playing time together is invaluable. The final 15 roster is going to be named at the end of March.

Technically, right now, we are still in a tryout phase. We have 18 people on the team, but 3 will be named alternates.
We have had some off field excitement while playing in Florida. We were introduced at a New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Spring Training Game. At the Tampa Bay game, all 5 of the pitchers got to throw out a first pitch! Ironically, the Philadelphia Phillies, were the opponents during both games! They probably think we were following them... :)

Some other off field excitement is that Terrell Owens showed up at one of our games and took pictures with the team. It was really exciting to see him out there. Don’t tell anyone... but we asked totally asked for his autograph! It’s awesome to be able to see other athletes support us. Were all fans of athletics, we just so happen to be lucky enough to play a sport we LOVE. Well, I guess that’s all for now, I am going to try and get some extra rest. I’ll see you at the at the FIELD!!
